Commonly Asked
Lawn Questions
How do I choose a grass seed mix?
In a tough climate like Saskatchewan,
varieties of fine fescues and perennial
ryegrasses are preferred because they are
drought tolerant, they germinate quickly, and
they do not need frequent fertilizer.
How low do I cut my grass?
After you have an established lawn, keep at a
length of around four inches tall to ensure lush,
green growth and minimum weed growth.
When should I fertilize my grass? What
fertilizer should I use?
Your lawn should be fertilized three times a year.
Mid to later May is the time for the application
with two more applications following about 6
weeks apart. Fertilizing much earlier than mid
May is not recommended in Saskatchewan because
new growth is susceptible to frost damage.
I've got bare patches in my lawn after the
winter, what can I do?To
keep your lawn thick and healthy we recommend
over seeding your lawn. Over seeding is simply
sowing seeds on an existing lawn it is
considered an important step to keeping your
lawn thick and discouraging weeds. Over seeding
can be done in either spring or fall.
To Overseed:
1. Rake the lawn well to expose all the bare
patches.2. Fill in any holes or
uneven areas with top soil. 3.
Put down a light layer of topsoil (0.5 to 1.5
cm) over existing grass. 4. Apply
the grass seed using a broadcast spreader or sow
the seed by hand - apply generously.
5. Walk over the lawn so that the seed is in
firm contact with the soil, or use a lawn roller
if available. 6. Make sure the
seed is lightly watered every day, don't let it
dry out but don't drown it. Once you start to
see the seeds germinating - between 8 and 15
days - you can cut back on the watering.
7. Let the new plants grow to about 4 inches
long before mowing.
Weed Control:
There are 2 products available.
The most environmental choice is Corn Gluten.
This will not kill existing weeds but will help
to prevent further infestation.
Corn Gluten is used as a pre-emergent
which inhibits seed germination. This should be
used in early Spring (mid to late May) as well
as late fall.
The other option is to use a weed and feed which
is a fertilizer with herbicide added and should
be used during active weed growth. |
